The border between the Republic of Moldova and Romania is a water border in Europe . The border is also the external border of the European Union .

Of the total of 3,069 kilometers of the Romanian border, 683 kilometers are the border with the Republic of Moldova . With the exception of a 570 m long section in the Danube , the border runs entirely in the Pruth river .

The border begins in the northwest at Criva in the Briceni district and ends in the southeast at Giurgiulești on the Danube. The course of the border was determined in 1940 as a result of the Hitler-Stalin Pact and restored in 1945. After Moldova's independence, it was kept unchanged in 1991.
