Taraclia ( Bulgarian / Russian Тараклия / Taraklija ) is a city in the south of the Republic of Moldova with around 21,000 inhabitants and the capital of the raion of the same name . Taraclia is located near the border with Ukraine as well as near the autonomous region of Gagauzia . The Taraclia State University has been located in the city since 2004 .
A special feature of Taraclias is the high proportion of Bulgarians living there , who make up the majority of the population in the city itself and in the surrounding area. Besides Parcani in Transnistria , Taraclia is one of the few larger settlements outside of Bulgaria that is mostly inhabited by Bulgarians. Numerous Moldovans , Russians , Ukrainians and Gagauzians also live in the multicultural city .
