Vulcăneşti (1944–1989, Cyrillic Вулкэнешть , Russian Вулканешты / Wulkaneschty ; Gagauz Valkaneş ) is a city in the autonomous region of Gagauzia in the Republic of Moldova . According to the local administration, the population is around 18,000, around two thirds of them belong to the Turkic-speaking ethnic group of the Gagauz .
Vulcăneşti is the third largest city in Gagauzia and the most important settlement in the southern part of the region. It is therefore important as a regional economic and cultural center. The city is only a few kilometers from the border with Ukraine.
