Naum Ilyich Achijeser (born March 6, 1901 in Tscherykau , today Belarus ; † June 3, 1980 in Charkow , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Russian or Ukrainian mathematician who dealt with functional analysis and approximation theory.

Naum Iljitsch Achijeser studied in Kiev until 1924 , received his doctorate there in 1928 under Dmitrij Grawe and then taught in Kiev until 1933 and then at the Polytechnic and from 1956 at the University of Kharkiv . In the tradition of Pafnuti Lwowitsch Tschebyschow , Andrei Andrejewitsch Markow and Jegor Iwanowitsch Solotarjow he dealt with the approximation of functions. His textbook on it received the Chebyshev Prize. From 1935 he investigated extreme problems in various functional rooms, partly with Mark Grigoryevich Kerin . He worked with Sergei Bernstein on completeness of function spaces spanned by sets of polynomials. Another field of work was the theory of moments, i.e. the question of how a measure can be reconstructed from the values ​​of the integrals of certain functions (e.g. power functions) formed with this measure - originally a problem of probability theory.

Achijeser founded in Kharkiv own school of the theory of real functions, was president of the Mathematical Society in Kharkiv and member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine .

His students include Israel Markowitsch Glasman and Boris Levitan .

He should not be confused with his brother, the theoretical physicist Alexander Ilyich Achijeser .
