Boris Levitan , Russian Борис Моисеевич Левитан , English transcription Boris Levitan , (born May 25, jul. / 7. June  1914 greg. In Berdyansk , Taurida Gubernia , † 4. April 2004 in Minneapolis ) was a Russian or Ukrainian mathematician , known for his contributions to the theory of almost periodic functions and to the Sturm-Liouville theory and in particular to the theory of inverse problems (Gelfand-Levitan theory).

Life

Boris Levitan was born in Berdjansk in 1914 and grew up in Kharkiv , where he received his doctorate from Naum Ilyich Achijeser in 1938 with the subject of Some Generalizations of Near-Periodic Functions , and in 1940 he obtained his habilitation (Russian doctorate) with the thesis Theory of Generalized Translation Operators . After military service from 1941 to 1944 in World War II, in which he was involved, among other things, in the Battle of Stalingrad , he taught at the Felix Dzerzhinsky Military Academy from 1944 to 1961 and from 1961 at the Lomonosov University . Most recently, he worked at the University of Minnesota .

He received the Order of Lenin .

He is known for the Gelfand-Levitan theory with Israel Gelfand from 1951. The theory solves the problem of the inverse scattering theory for (initially one-dimensional) Sturm-Liouville problems such as the time-independent Schrödinger equation or the wave equation with a scattering potential, i.e. the reconstruction of the potential from the scatter data via an integral equation (Gelfand-Levitan equation). This later became important in the soliton theory. The Gelfand-Levitan theory was expanded in Russia by Vladimir Alexandrowitsch Martschenko , so that it is also called Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko theory.
