The Faculty of Catholic theology at the University of Tilburg , the emerged from the Theological Faculty Tilburg (TFT) Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Tilburg . Since 2011 it has been called the Tilburg School of Theology (TST).

history

In 1964, the dioceses of Breda and Den Bosch created the Gemeenschappelijk Instituut voor Theologie (Joint Institute for Theology) in Tilburg , primarily to train their future priests . On the initiative of the bishops of Breda, Gerardus Henricus de Vet, and Den Bosch, Johannes Bluyssen , the institute was expanded and the Theological Faculty Tilburg was founded with effect from March 15, 1967 . In 1968 the Dutch bishops gave the new faculty the right to educate Catholic priests from all over the Dutch Catholic area.

From September 1970 the Theological Faculteit Tilburg received financial grants from the state. Their professors were accepted into the state pension institutions; the students were given access to government loans. With the royal decree of October 5, 1974, the Theological Faculteit Tilburg received the status of a private denominational university with the right to award academic titles , including the right to award doctorates . In this respect, the faculty was placed on an equal footing with the Dutch universities .

On January 1, 2006, the previously independent Theological Faculteit Tilburg joined the University of Tilburg and became its Faculteit Theologie en Religiewetenschappen (Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies) (FTR). In 2007 the FTR merged with the Katholieke Theologische Universiteit Utrecht (KTU). Therefore, in addition to its headquarters in Tilburg, FTR also has a subsidiary in Utrecht .

Since the Church's recognition of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Nijmegen was withdrawn in 2006, the Faculteit Theologie en Religiewetenschappen (FTR) of the University of Tilburg has been the only university in the Netherlands where priests are trained.
