The term Schoduvel (from the Middle Low German düvel "devil" and scho "shoo") describes an old custom of using noise, disguise and terrifying demeanor to scare away the evil spirits of cold, death and danger. The carnival parade in Braunschweig has been closely associated with the term Schoduvel since 2005 .

origin

The Schoduvel was first mentioned in the Braunschweig city book in 1293. There it says the members of the guilds

"Lepen sunderliche schoduvel unde hadden grote danße in the vastelavende unde sunderliche location"

(= started the special Schoduvel and had a big dance on Fastel evening and their special festival). Here the dance and the Schoduo run seem to have been a simultaneous event, as in Magdeburg . There one of the guild students jumped around in the devil's manner after initially dancing. ( eynlich des enes dantzes before deme biscoppe vnde jumped so schuduuele ). In 1474 the Schoduvel was mentioned for the first time in a document book.

The Middle Low German word "Schoduvel" means something like "mask, larva, (devil) face", possibly also "scarecrow" or "something with which to scare away the devil". It can also be transmitted a little more popularly with shows of the devil .

Braunschweig Carnival Parade

Carnival parade in Braunschweig 2005

The Braunschweig parade takes place on the Sunday before Rose Monday. The foolish hustle and bustle was revived by a children's carnival parade in 1979 at the suggestion of the mayor. Since 2005 attempts have been made to "substantiate" this custom historically by establishing a connection to the medieval Schoduvel . Since then there has not been a continuous carnival culture in Braunschweig.

Visitor numbers

In 1984 around 50,000 youngsters saw the Braunschweiger Schoduvel. At the beginning of the 1990s the audience number of 200,000 was exceeded for the first time. The highest number so far was recorded in 1998 at the 20th carnival parade and in 2011 at the 33rd Schoduvel with around 280,000 visitors. In 2014, a new record was set with 300,000 spectators.

With a length of more than 6 km, the Braunschweig Schoduvel is advertised as the largest carnival procession in northern Germany and the fourth largest after Cologne , Düsseldorf and Mainz .

particularities

The three symbolic figures of the scarecrow (Schoduvel), the pea bear and spring in the form of a young woman are regularly represented in the carnival parade. They also adorn the medals of Braunschweig carnival clubs.

Rejection in 2015 due to "specific risk from an Islamist attack"

On the eve of the carnival parade, there was a tip from a V-man of the Lower Saxony constitutional protection , who is supposed to be an informant in the Salafist scene Braunschweig-Wolfsburg. The whistleblower or his tip was classified as credible by the state and constitution protection. According to this, there should be a terrorist attack on the old town market at around 1 p.m., the start of the live broadcast on television . So it was not an anonymous (bomb) threat, but according to the Lower Saxony Minister for Interior and Sport Boris Pistorius ( SPD ), "very concrete, very reliable indications". Michael Pientka, police chief of Braunschweig, added at a televised press conference : "The specific danger is expressly related to today and today's event."

In coordination with representatives of the city of Braunschweig, including Mayor Ulrich Markurth (SPD), as well as the responsible state security authorities and security organs, it was unanimously decided on Sunday morning to cancel the Schoduvel 2015 at short notice. In good weather, 250,000 onlookers were expected. Since the cancellation was only made shortly before 11:00, less than two hours before the move began, loudspeaker trucks drove through the city to spread the word. The population was also informed about the cancellation and the risk situation via radio, television and the Internet and asked to leave the route of the move and the city center or not to travel at all.

Several areas of the city center , such as the old town market, which is the central point of the parade, and from which, among other things, the NDR has been reporting live with camera teams for years, and the Bohlweg were then searched with explosive detection dogs. However, two abandoned items (a thermos and a cardboard box) were found to be harmless. At around 4 p.m., the closure of the city center was lifted.

On February 17, which took over Landeskriminalamt Lower the investigation because of "suspicion of preparing a serious subversive violence" according to § 89a of the Criminal Code .

In mid-May 2015, the investigation was discontinued because the initial suspicion of a planned attack could not be substantiated.

Braunschweig Carnival Associations

The Schoduvel is organized by the non-profit committee Braunschweiger Karneval. This consists of the three traditional Braunschweig carnival societies: the Carnival Association of the Rhinelander e. V. (KVR), the Braunschweig Carnival Society founded by Max Jüdel in 1872 (BKG) and the Mascheroder Carnival Society Rot-Weiß 1965 eV (MKG). They are supported by the city of Braunschweig.

Over 200 groups from carnival associations and plays from all over Lower Saxony took part in the parade itself. In addition, carnival groups from abroad are also represented in Braunschweig. B. from Belgium.
