The Umeå Kunstcampus ( Swedish Konstnärligt Campus , English Umeå Arts Campus ) is a campus of the Umeå University in Sweden . It is located in the former industrial area of ​​the city of Umeå on the banks of the Ume älv river , which has been under construction since 2009. The campus is home to the Art School , the Design School and the School of Architecture of Umeå University. Furthermore, the Bildmuseet Umeå , a museum for international contemporary art and visual culture, moved to the art campus in 2012.

History and remodeling

The art college has been on the site in a former paper mill since 1987. The design college was added in 1989 after an old substation was rebuilt according to the plans of the architect Olle Qvarnström. In 2008 Umeå University decided to invest a total of SEK 350 million in the art campus together with the Baltic Group charity . The aim is to create a creative environment for education, research and professional activity in the fields of architecture, design, art and digital culture. "The goal is for Umeå to become a creative center on the global stage," says Göran Sandberg, who was rector of the university at the time of planning. The campus is intended to serve as a creative inspiration not only for university members, but also for the residents of Umeås and visitors from outside. The architecture and design of the campus attract visitors. The building was designed by the Danish architect Henning Larsen . In May 2012, the art campus was officially inaugurated.
