Markus Rühl (born February 22, 1972 in Roßdorf ) is a former German professional bodybuilder of the DBFV / IFBB .

Life

The trained car mechanic and office clerk started bodybuilding in 1991 after playing soccer. He went to a gym to strengthen his leg muscles on the advice of a doctor after a knee injury. But in the end Rühl enjoyed training with heavy weights more than soccer, so he stayed with bodybuilding.

In 1997, still as an amateur, he won the Hessian state championship and the German championship. He then received the IFBB professional card and made bodybuilding his profession. Rühl, who was one of the heaviest and greatest athletes with a competition weight of around 130 kg, was called "the freak" or "the German beast" by the specialist press. In 1999 he was one of the finalists in the Mr. Olympia competition in Las Vegas . A year later he won the contest Night of Champions in New York City ranked second, at the Night of Champions is considered the first place, the biggest ever as his success in the year of 2002. This was followed by further participation in the Mr. Olympia elections, in which in 2004 a 5th place was the best result so far. On October 8, 2007, Rühl announced his retirement from active bodybuilding. In November 2008, at the German bodybuilding championship in Wiesloch, he reported about comeback plans. On May 17, 2009 he made his comeback on the New York Pro, where he finished 3rd. In the 2009 Mr. Olympia election, which took place in Las Vegas from September 24 to 27, 2009, Rühl came in 15th. Then he announced another professional year. In 2010, Rühl once again set his sights on the Mr. Olympia and planned a good placement at the "Europa Super Show" 2010 in Dallas for qualification. In this performance he came in 7th place, which led him to his final withdrawal from professional bodybuilding.

In January 2006 he and his colleague Stefan Hammerschmiedt took over the Ottwald sports studio in Kelsterbach am Main. At the end of 2007, Rühl sold the Ottwald sports studio to Hammerschmiedt. Rühl and his ex-wife Simone have been running Rühl's fit & fun in Darmstadt since December 2007 . Since his resignation he can be found at many events. He was also an advertising medium for the supplement manufacturer BMS and has been sponsored by All Stars Supplements since the beginning of 2014 . On June 4, 2018, he announced the end of this partnership. He also acts as a moderator and promoter.

In August 2016, Rühl and his partner Alicja became the father of a daughter for the first time. The couple married on August 31, 2017.
