Otto Dingeldein (philologist)

Georg August Otto Dingeldein (born June 14, 1861 in Romrod ; † July 6, 1951 in Büdingen ) was a German philologist , high school professor and specialist book author.

Otto Dingeldein was the fifth of six children of from Reichelsheim (Odenwald) originating evangelical pastor of Romrod in Vogelsberg and later Upper pastor and dean of Alsfeld (Johann) Georg Dingeldein (1808-1873) and his wife, the pastor's daughter Sidonie (Pink Luise) born Wiener (1823-1904); the general of the infantry Ludwig Dingeldein (1855–1931) is his brother. He was married to Emilie , née Klein (1866–1956); the couple had a son, Rudolf (* 1890), later a bookseller in Leipzig , and a daughter (1892–1981), Helene , married Schroeder .

Professional background

After attending the secondary school in Alsfeld and from 1876 the grammar school in Gießen as well as studying classical and modern philology at the University of Gießen, Otto Dingeldein passed the state examination on March 1, 1884 for the grammar school subjects Greek , Latin and German for all school levels as well as French for the intermediate level. With the dissertation De participio home rico quaestionum specimen he was from the June 20, 1884 Hessian Großherzoglich-Ludwigs-University of Giessen to Dr. phil. PhD.

Dingeldein entered the higher education service on May 20, 1884 at the Wolfgang Ernst Gymnasium in Büdingen as a “provisional teacher” and was soon appointed by Prince Bruno of Ysenburg and Büdingen to be the tutor of his son, Hereditary Prince Wolfgang ; In the course of time he taught more children from other noble families in his private house. On November 27, 1887, the Hessian Grand Duke appointed “the provisional teacher at the Büdingen grammar school presented by Prince Bruno of Ysenburg and Büdingen, Dr. Otto Dingeldein as a teacher at this institution ”. This was later followed by the promotion to senior teacher and finally on November 15, 1899, the award of the character "professor". Dingeldein retired on May 1, 1924.

In addition to his teaching activities, Otto Dingeldein has emerged as the author of a whole series of writings and essays on philological, didactic and historical (including regional historical) topics (see the selection below); especially his study of rhyme in ancient languages ​​has received attention to this day.

Others

Otto Dingeldein was a member of the regional synod of the Evangelical Church in Hesse from 1895 to 1910 . After the First World War , he was politically active for a few years as district chairman of the German National People's Party .

In 1907 he was awarded the Knight's Cross First Class of the Grand Ducal Hessian Order of Philipps .
