After the founding of Greater Hesse in 1945, the district belonged to the Darmstadt administrative district . On August 1, 1972, it was united with the neighboring Lauterbach district to form the Vogelsbergkreis , whose administrative seat was Lauterbach.

geography

At the beginning of 1972 the district bordered in a clockwise direction in the northwest on the districts of Marburg , Ziegenhain , Lauterbach , Büdingen and Gießen .

history

In 1821 the offices in the Grand Duchy of Hesse were dissolved and districts and districts were formed. In the later area of the Alsfeld district, these were the Kirtorf district with its seat in Homberg and the Romrod district with its seat in Alsfeld. By edict of June 6, 1832 and the implementing ordinance of August 20, 1832, these district councils were repealed and merged into the Alsfeld district. Only the place Ermenrod (previously to Kirtorf) came to the new district Grünberg .

By announcement of December 28, 1838, the district of Schlitz was dissolved and assigned to the Alsfeld district with effect from February 1, 1839.

From 1848 to 1852 the district was part of the Alsfeld administrative district . On May 12, 1852, the administrative districts were repealed. A newly delimited district of Alsfeld was created from the regional court districts Alsfeld and Homberg as well as some places in the regional court district Ulrichstein. The Schlitz room came to the Lauterbach district.

After the German War , it was agreed in the peace treaty of September 3, 1866 that an Kurhessian enclave , the former Mainz court of Katzenberg with the four communities of Ohmes , Ruhlkirchen , Seibelsdorf and Vockenrod, fell to the Grand Duchy. These communities, which until then had belonged to the Kirchhain district of Hesse , were now added to the Alsfeld district.

During the Hessian district reform of 1874, when the Grünberg district was dissolved, the 13 communities Atzenhain , Bernsfeld , Ermenrod , Flensungen , Ilsdorf , Kirschgarten , Lehnheim , Merlau , Nieder-Ohmen , Ober-Ohmen , Ruppertenrod , Wettsaasen and Zeilbach were added to the Alsfeld district. At the same time, Helpershain , Köddingen , Meiches and Stumpertenrod moved from the Alsfeld district to the Schotten district . Thereafter, the Alsfeld district comprised 84 communities.

Due to the law of April 7, 1938, the Schotten district was dissolved and with effect from October 1, 1938, 13 municipalities were incorporated into the Alsfeld district. Köddingen, Stumpertenrod, Altenhain , Bobenhausen II , Groß-Eichen , Helpershain , Höckersdorf , Ilsdorf (Solms) , Ober-Seibertenrod , Schmitten , Sellnrod , Unter-Seibertenrod and Wohnfeld were added . After Ilsdorf (Solms) were incorporated into Ilsdorf and Kirschgarten to Merlau in 1939 and Schmitten to Sellnrod in 1951, the district comprised 94 communities,

As part of the Hessian regional reform , numerous municipalities in the Alsfeld district were merged between 1969 and 1972. On December 31, 1971, the district was also reduced in size:

  • The communities of Lehnheim and Altenhain left the district and were incorporated into Grünberg and Laubach in the district of Gießen.
  • The communities of Bobenhausen II, Helpershain, Ober-Seibertenrod, Unter-Seibertenrod and Wohnfeld left the district and were incorporated into Ulrichstein in the Lauterbach district.

Overall, the number of municipalities in the district decreased to 14 by July 1972.

On August 1, 1972, the Alsfeld district was dissolved and merged with the neighboring Lauterbach district to form the Vogelsbergkreis . At the same time, further incorporations took place. In the end, ten communities from the Alsfeld district joined the new Vogelsberg district.
