Schwalmtal is located on the upper reaches of the Schwalm on the northern edge of the Vogelsberg .

Neighboring communities

The municipality borders the cities of Alsfeld and Grebenau in the north, the city of Lauterbach in the east, the municipality Lautertal in the south and the municipality of Feldatal and the city of Romrod in the west .

history

Territorial reform

In the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse , the Schwalmtal community was reorganized on December 31, 1971 through the merger of the previously independent communities of Brauerschwend, Hergersdorf, Hopfgarten, Ober-Sorg, Rainrod, Renzendorf, Storndorf, Unter-Sorg and Vadenrod.

mayor

Timo Georg has been the mayor of the Schwalmtal community since July 1, 2012 . He prevailed in the mayoral election on March 11, 2012 with 56.3% of the votes cast against two opposing candidates. The previous mayor Jürgen Adam ( SPD ) had refused to run again after 18 years in office.

economy

The districts of Brauerschwend and Storndorf both have a primary school, a kindergarten and a grocery store. There is also a branch of the VR-Bank in both places. The main industrial area of ​​the municipality is located in Storndorf. In addition, the district garbage dump, which is managed by the ZAV, is located in the municipality. In the district of Rainrod there are two carpenter's shops (Adolf Dickel and Erwin Welker) and the Graulich restaurant, which is well-known beyond the region. In Hergersdorf there is an insurance office with its headquarters in Alsfeld (Anita Müller-Dippel, LVM-Versicherungen).

In Brauerschwend and Storndorf there is a practice for general medicine and a dental practice each.

One of the few lens-growing areas in Germany is also located in the municipality.

traffic

The federal road 254 runs through the municipality and leads from Alsfeld via Lauterbach to Fulda . A few years ago the route to bypass was changed.

The Renzendorf station was the stop of the Vogelsbergbahn until December 2011 .
