Jamaica (musical)

Jamaica is a musical with the music of Harold Arlen and the lyrics by EY Harburg . The book wrote Harburg, together with Fred Saidy .

It premiered on October 31, 1957 at the Imperial Theater in New York . The musical was produced by David Merrick , directed by Robert Lewis and choreographed by Jack Cole . The well-known singer Lena Horne played the first Savannah alongside Ricardo Montalbán and thus her first Broadway star role. The musical was nominated for a total of seven Tony Awards in 1958 .

The musical is hardly known in German-speaking countries today. Only the theater in Cronenberg in Wuppertal played during the 1996/97 season in the musical revue It's showtime No. 2 individual pieces.

The poor Jamaican fisherman Koli loves the beautiful Savannah. But she dreams of traveling to New York and prospering. The rich American Joe Nashua seems to be able to fulfill that dream.

But during a hurricane , Koli saves her younger brother so that she can find her true love and accept life on the island.
