The Oberhessische utilities AG (OVAG) is a regional energy and water utility based in Friedberg (Hessen) . The legal predecessor of OVAG was founded over 100 years ago. OVAG is part of the OVVG Group, one hundred percent of which is municipal property through its shareholders, Wetteraukreis , Vogelsbergkreis and Landkreis Gießen . The core business includes the procurement, generation and Germany-wide sales of electricity and natural gas . Other important lines of business are drinking water supply , heating services and the expansion of renewable energies . This includes the construction and operation of wind power and photovoltaic systems as well as local heating networks with biomass firing and combined heat and power plants.

As an energy service provider, OVAG is also involved in the supply area in the area of e-mobility and also advises customers on energy efficiency. Numerous energy services are offered as part of energy advice and a dedicated funding program , such as B. Checks for heating or photovoltaic systems . In addition, OVAG offers various services for the energy and municipal sectors, including services for IT and street lighting.

Sister companies of OVAG are through the OVVG group the Verkehrsgesellschaft Oberhessen (VGO) and the ovag Netz GmbH.

As a metering point and distribution network operator, ovag Netz GmbH is responsible for the management and expansion of the energy supply network, which is leased from OVAG. The network area covers around 3,000 km² and extends over the district of Gießen, the Vogelsbergkreis, the Wetteraukreis and the Main-Kinzig-Kreis.

history

The Upper Hessian utilities rely on the commitment of the Provincial Director Dr. Andreas Breidert and the forest master Dr. Karl Weber back. With the plan to finance the electrification of Upper Hesse with the sale of drinking water, they founded the waterworks in Inheiden. The subsequent construction of the overland power system for the province of Upper Hesse is considered to be the hour of birth of the Upper Hessian utilities. On April 1, 1912, engineer Richard von Stadler took over construction management for the construction of the plant, which was to distribute the electricity generated from the power plant in Wölfersheim in the region. 15 communities can be supplied with electricity just one year after the start of construction. Södel and Dorheim were the first places in which electric light shone.

In 1923 the hydropower plant in Lißberg was put into operation and the overland plant was renamed "Overland plant Oberhessen". When the province of Upper Hesse was dissolved on July 1, 1937, the “Upper Hessian Utilities Association” (ZOV) was founded with the participation of the five Upper Hessian districts of Alsfeld, Büdingen, Friedberg, Gießen and Lauterbach, which prevented expropriation by the Nazi regime.

In order to increase the efficiency of the ZOV, the "Oberhessische Vertriebsbetriebe AG" (OVAG) was founded in 1972 as a subsidiary of the special purpose association. In 1994, with the entry into local public transport (ÖPNV) under the umbrella of the ZOV, the "Oberhessische Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH" (OVVG) came into being, under whose roof OVAG is now one of the investments.

In 2002, in the course of the liberalization of the energy markets, OVAG outsourced the entire “sales and marketing” business operation for power supply, which resulted in ovag Energie AG.

In the same year, OVAG also acquired HessenEnergie GmbH, based in Wiesbaden, from the Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen in order to further advance projects on the efficient use of energy and the use of renewable energies. Among other things, HessenEnergie GmbH took over the operation of the Vogelsberg wind energy park in 2003 , which was the first wind park in inland Germany to be built by OVAG in 1990.

The OVAG Group celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012. Further investments in the future of the company and in the energy transition followed. In September 2012 the OVAG biogas plant was inaugurated in Wölfersheim-Berstadt, which has been operated since then by Biogas Oberhessen GmbH & Co. KG, a 100% subsidiary of OVAG. In addition, the solar park in Linden and the Wölfersheim solar park with a total annual output of 10 megawatts went online this year .

In 2018, OVAG expanded the charging network for electric vehicles in its own supply area to over 60 charging stations. This project (HA project no .: 560 / 17-42) was funded by the funding program for electromobility in Hesse.

In June 2019, ovag Energie AG was merged with OVAG.

In September 2019 it was announced that the Bundestag member Oswin Veith will become a full-time member of the OVAG Board of Directors from January 1, 2020. The CDU politician will resign his parliamentary mandate in February 2020.
