The Nidderkraftwerk is a hydroelectric plant on the Nidder at Lißberg , a district of Ortenberg in Hesse . It was built in 1923 by the Oberhessen overland plant and is now a cultural and historical monument. The power plant is operated by the Upper Hessian utility company (OVAG) , the legal successor to the Oberhessen overland plant.

The power plant was originally designed as a pumped storage power plant and has two upper basins : the Hillersbach reservoir with 162,000 m³ of storage capacity and Hirzenhain an der Nidder with 43,000 m³. Both upper basins have 7 m high dams as barrier structures. They were renovated in 2001 and still serve as storage basins today. For pressure equalization, the power plant has a water lock at the mouth of the underground pressure pipes . The pressure pipe leads into the machine house located near Lißberg . It has two turbines with an output of 0.8 and 1.5 MW, for a total of 2.3 MW. In the course of the renovation work by OVAG, however, pipes with a narrower cross-section had to be placed in the existing ones. Therefore the generators can only deliver 1.5 MW at maximum water flow .

Because of this relatively low output, it is not this power plant, but the Koepchenwerk and the Niederwartha pumped storage plant that are considered to be the first large-scale pumped storage power plants.

Since pumped storage turned out to be uneconomical, the power plant has not been operated as a pumped storage power plant since 1978, but only as a storage power plant . As long as there is enough water available, the power plant can supply up to 2,300 households with electricity. Today there are still two diesel generators available in the machine house in order to be able to supply additional electricity in an emergency.
