Hans Rupprecht Goette

Hans Rupprecht Goette (* 1956 in Soest ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Career

Hans Rupprecht Goette graduated from the Dreikönigsgymnasium in Cologne in 1975 (old language branch) and studied classical archeology, Latin philology and history at the universities of Cologne , Bonn , Munich and Göttingen from 1975 to 1982 . In 1980/81 he was studying in Rome as a DAAD scholarship holder . In 1982 he completed his studies in Göttingen with a master's degree. This was followed by teaching assignments in Göttingen until 1995, where he also received his doctorate in 1984 with the dissertation Studies on Roman toga representations. He then became a research assistant in Göttingen, but started the travel grant in 1985 , with which he was able to travel to the Mediterranean region until 1986 . In 1986 Goette became a general consultant at the German Archaeological Institute in Athens , in 1992 he became a consultant for historical regional studies and head of the photo archive there. In 1994 he held teaching positions at the Philipps University in Marburg and at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . Goette completed his habilitation in 1997 at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen with a thesis on the topic Ό ἀξιόλογος δῆμος Σούνιον (Ho axiólogos dēmos Sounion). Studies in regional studies in Southeast Attica and then became a private lecturer in Giessen. In 2002 he moved to Berlin as a consultant for the library and editing at the headquarters of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). In 2004 he was also appointed Associate Professor in Giessen. In 2015, Goette Almut Benecke succeeded him as head of the library at the DAI headquarters in Berlin.

In Athens, Goette co-organized the international conference HG Lolling and Greek regional studies and epigraphy in 1994, Ancient Roads in Greece in 1998 and Ludwig Ross in Greece 1832-1846 in 2002 . He was also co-organizer of the exhibition The Change of Archaeological Monuments in Historical and Contemporary Photographs , which was shown between 1995 and 1997 in Zurich, Heidelberg, Hanover and Münster. Lectures and conference participation took him to Austria, Switzerland, Greece, Great Britain and the USA. He is a corresponding member of the DAI. Goette researches in particular the topography and settlement archeology of Greece, especially in Attica as well as on Aigina and Euboia , on ancient architecture, on ancient sculpture, in particular on Roman portrait sculpture, on realism and on the use of marble in antiquity.
