Simone Michel

Simone Michel, Baroness von Dungern (* 1965 in Mainsondheim ) is a German classical archaeologist . She is a specialist in ancient glyptics .

Simone Michel has been studying classical archeology, art history , prehistory and early history as well as Egyptology since 1984, first at the University of Würzburg and then at the University of Hamburg , where she passed her master's examination in 1989. She then gained her first experience in archaeological research at the Archaeological Institute of the University of Hamburg as part of the Scythian / Thracian project funded by the German Research Foundation . Michel was a doctoral scholar from 1991 to 1994 and also worked on the magical gems of the British Museum in London in 1991/92 . In 1994 Simone Michel was born in Hamburg with the work The Fish in Scythian Art. Doctorate on the interpretation of Scythian image content . This was followed by a habilitation grant from the DFG from 1995 to 1997 , which took her to the USA for several months. With the work The magical gems. On pictures and magic formulas on cut stones from antiquity and modern times , she completed her habilitation in 1997 at the University of Giessen and became a private lecturer there in 1998 . She also taught art and style history at the State Drawing Academy in Hanau from 1999 to 2009 . Michel was awarded the Hans Reimer Prize in 2000 by the Aby Warburg Foundation .

Michel is best known as a specialist in glyptics, especially the so-called magical gems , and thus continues the Hamburg tradition of gem research, which was mainly shaped by Peter Zazoff . She does research not only on ancient originals, but also on modern reproductions and the history of modern gem collections.

Since the beginning of 2010 she has been the director of the Malerwinkelhaus Museum in Marktbreit .
