The Museum Malerwinkelhaus Marktbreit is a municipal museum in the Lower Franconian town of Marktbreit . It is located in the so-called Malerwinkelhaus in the old town of Marktbreiter .

history

A museum in Marktbreit dates back to 1909. At that time, the General Conservatory in Munich recommended that the Kitzingen District Office , in which Marktbreit was located, set up a local museum. The consistory hall of the town hall was planned as an exhibition space. However, this early attempt to establish a museum failed. The planning that was carried out from the 1950s for the construction of a local history museum went exactly the same way.

The renovation of the Malerwinkelhaus, which belongs to the city, in 1987 was the reason to think about a museum again. In the house, art by children was to be shown, which was in the tradition of the exhibition organized by the Leo Weismantel Society in 1929. Karin Radermacher, member of the state parliament, advocated such use . After consultation with the state office for non-state museums in Bavaria , the history of the market-wide Roman camp should also be examined in the house.

The museum was inaugurated on May 17, 1991 without having any furnishings or exhibits. It became clear that a children's art museum could not be implemented in the rooms. First, the city of Marktbreit set up a voluntary museum committee to develop a concept. As a result, the exhibition was specialized and the aim was to show the "woman in the history of Marktbreits" in the museum. The framework concept was presented in 1993.

In 1994 the first exhibits for the permanent exhibition were purchased. By the end of 1998, over 6000 inventoried objects had come together, and the design and interior design of the permanent exhibition began in the same year. The permanent exhibition “Woman's Room” was only completed in spring 2003. In 2010 the museum received a scientific management. In the following period the exhibition was modernized.

building

The museum is housed in the so-called Malerwinkelhaus at Bachgasse 2. The house was built in the 17th century by one of the trading families based in Marktbreit and was extensively renovated in 1774. The house thus also represents the history of the city in the early modern period , which was characterized by economic growth. The Malerwinkelhaus presents itself as a two-storey eaves side building with a steep pitched roof and half-timbering . It got its name from the idyllic location on the Breitbach , which made it a popular motif for painters. Until the 1950s, however, people mostly spoke of the house at the Maintor.

Permanent exhibitions

Two permanent exhibitions form the core of the museum presentation. The show “Frauenzimmer. Stations of life in a small Franconian town ”. Here life paths of different women in the 19th and 20th centuries are made comprehensible. The focus is on (gender-specific) toys, youth and school education, marriage and its alternatives and fashion. With the so-called midwifery room and the midwifery book by Anna Dorothea Rosen presented there, one of Bavaria's 100 home treasures can also be found here.

The Roman Cabinet on the first floor focuses on the Roman camp discovered in 1985 during aerial photographs . It emerged from a special exhibition that was presented in 2001 in the Malerwinkelhaus. Objects are exhibited that were unearthed during excavations around the Roman camp. The daily life of the Roman legionaries should also be made comprehensible. The exhibition is currently (2019) closed and will reopen in 2020.

Special exhibitions (selection)

The Museum Malerwinkelhaus organizes a special exhibition about twice a year that deals with various historical topics. In addition to the exhibitions, a series of publications has been published since 2010, which guides through the exhibition as a scientific booklet and catalog . The exhibition in the winter half of the year mostly deals with Christmas customs and is connected to a Christmas market organized by the museum.
