List of classical archaeologists at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of classical archaeologists at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg includes all university professors who taught or teach at the Institute for Classical Archeology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (or before it was founded as archaeologists in the Philology Department). As a rule, this includes all regular university professors who were allowed or allowed to give lectures, i.e. who had habilitation . Specifically, these are full professors , non-scheduled professors , junior professors , visiting professors , honorary professors , chair representatives, private lecturers and archaeologists of the middle class such as assistants and employees . Other employees such as lecturers or employees in research and third-party funded projects are only taken into account in justified exceptional cases, such as a very long teaching relationship or where there is a lasting impact on science and the history of the institute.

At first in Heidelberg, as in many other universities, archeology was represented in the context of classical philology . Friedrich Creuzer was the first to teach archeology after the university was re-established in 1803. His private collection of ancient art ("Antiquarium Creuzerianum") formed the cornerstone of the later university collection. Karl Bernhard Stark became the first professor in the independent chair in 1855, and archeology became an independent institute in 1866. Under Friedrich von Duhn , the cast collection was greatly expanded for the 500th anniversary of the university in 1886. Under Arnold von Salis there was a spatial separation of seminar and collection. Thanks to him and Reinhard Herbig , the National Socialist influence on the subject could be kept within limits. Between the 1950s and 1970s, the university collection was again sustainably expanded under Roland Hampe . In addition, the original collection, the cast collection and the institute could be reunited in one place. Since 1968 there has been a second professorship, initially occupied by Jörg Schäfer , who added another focus to Heidelberg with the archeology of the Aegean Bronze Age. Tonio Hölscher was also able to implement major expansions in the middle section. A third professorship for a limited time was established after Classical Archeology at the University of Mannheim was discontinued in 2001 and the holder of the professorship, Reinhard Stupperich , was transferred to Heidelberg.

The first column shows the name of the person and their life data, the second column shows entry into the university, and the third column shows their departure. Column four names the highest position achieved at Heidelberg University. At other universities, the corresponding lecturer may have made an even more extensive scientific career. The next column lists special features, the career path or other information relating to the university or institute. The last column shows pictures of the lecturers, which is currently difficult due to the image rights.
