Jörg Schäfer

Jörg Schäfer (born April 25, 1926 in Stuttgart ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Schäfer attended the Eberhard-Ludwigs-Gymnasium Stuttgart . After his military service from 1944 to 1945 he studied classical archeology, ancient history , Greek and Latin at the University of Tübingen from the 1948 summer semester . On February 8, 1955 Shepherd was when Bernhard Schweitzer with the dissertation studies on prehistoric ceramics relief doctorate . In 1955/1956 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . In 1957 he became an employee of the Athens Department of the German Archaeological Institute under a contract for work . From 1963 to 1968 he was a consultant at the Athens Department of the German Archaeological Institute. Apart from classical archeology, Schäfer also deals with the translation of the modern Greek poet Konstantinos Kavafis . He is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute and a corresponding member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute as well as an honorary member of the Athens Archaeological Society . The University of Athens awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2003.
