Walther Krause (born December 31, 1890 in Schweidnitz , Province of Silesia , † October 25, 1960 in Göttingen ) was a German officer , most recently Lieutenant General in World War II .

Life

Krause joined the 3rd Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 156 on January 13, 1909 as a flag junior . After his appointment as ensign on July 18, 1909 and his promotion to lieutenant on June 16, 1910, he was initially used as a platoon leader with the outbreak of the First World War . From September 20, 1914, he was adjutant in the 1st battalion of his regiment. After being wounded on November 11, 1914 and a stay in the hospital, Krause was assigned to the replacement battalion and promoted to lieutenant on December 18, 1915 . As such, he served as a company commander until December 1, 1916. For the next two months he was transferred to the 23rd Infantry Brigade as an adjutant. He then commanded the machine-gun company of his main regiment for a month before he was finally transferred to the 22nd Reserve Infantry Brigade as an adjutant. He was supposed to stay here until the end of the war.

From May 1, 1919 to January 1, 1921 Krause led a company in the Guards Landess Rifle Corps in Neufville . After its dissolution, Krause joined the Reichswehr and served in various posts in the 17th Infantry Regiment . After further posts in the Wehrmacht , he became commander of the infantry school in Döberitz on October 10, 1939 . During the campaign in the west he was used as commander of Infantry Regiment 243 of the 60th Infantry Division .

In June 1941 Krause took over the training brigade (mot.) 900, which was made up of students from the army schools and led the war against the Soviet Union until the end of March 1942 . With effect from January 1, 1942, he was promoted to major general. From October 1, 1942 to January 1, 1943, he commanded the 14th Infantry Division (motorized) on the Eastern Front and was then transferred to the Führer Reserve . From February 25, 1943, he led the 170th Infantry Division near Leningrad for a year and was promoted to Lieutenant General in September 1943. After a short stay in the Führerreserve, Krause served from July 15, 1944 to October 15, 1944 as commander of Division No. 462 stationed in Lorraine . He was then used as a Korück in the 6th Army and, shortly before the end of the war, commanded a division group named after him during the struggle for the so-called " Reichsschutzstellung " in Austria. During the German surrender on May 8, 1945, he was taken prisoner by the United States . He was released on June 27, 1947.
