The complex of the school for the visually impaired and the state institute for the blind are two listed buildings on August-Bebel-Allee in Neukloster in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg ( Northwest Mecklenburg ).

History and architecture

The former school for the visually impaired, Clara Zetkin, was previously a teacher training college . The complex consists of multi-storey buildings in neo-Gothic shapes, which were built in brick from 1860 to 1865 according to designs by Theodor Krüger from Schwerin . The three-storey main building, with a three-axis central projection, which protrudes strongly, is closed off by a stepped gable, it was built in brick. The two-story outbuilding is two-story and stands over an H-shaped floor plan; it is similar in shape to the main building. The buildings were rebuilt to make them disabled-friendly and wheelchair accessible through various renovation measures, and elevators were also installed.

The Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Institute for the Blind was founded in 1864. The school for the visually impaired was set up in 1953 from its school section and moved to the former teachers' college in 1975. The teachers 'seminar was founded in 1862; it was previously located in Ludwigslust as a country school teachers' seminar. Blind children were accepted again from 1990, the sponsorship changed in 1998 to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Since May 2011, what is now known as the supraregional support center with the support focus on vision has been under the sponsorship of the district. The support center is responsible for blind and visually impaired children and young people throughout Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Blind and visually impaired children are looked after and trained. Around 100 children are currently attending the facility and are looked after in various ways by around 60 teachers who are accompanied by a nurse and a social worker.
