Greeneville is a city in Greene County in the US state of Tennessee and the seat of the county seat . In 2000 Greeneville had 15,198 inhabitants who lived in an area of 36.4 km 2 . The city is the county seat of Greene County. It is named after Nathanael Greene , a general of the War of Independence.
In November 1785, Greenville replaced Jonesborough as the capital of the short-lived State of Franklin , until it returned to North Carolina in 1788 and finally to Tennessee in 1796.
Andrew Johnson , former US President, lived in Greeneville for several years as a young adult, the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site is a reminder, but the city also became famous for the naming of a Los Angeles-class submarine after Greeneville, the USS Greeneville (SSN-772) .
The city is home to the Greeneville Astros , a rookie team of the Houston Astros that plays in the Appalachian League , a minor league baseball .
