Scott County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Huntsville .

The county is located northeast of the geographic center of Tennessee, borders Kentucky to the north and has an area of 1,381 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers are water. The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is located partially in this county. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: McCreary County, Kentucky, Campbell County , Anderson County , Morgan County , Fentress County, and Pickett County .

history
Scott County was formed on December 17, 1849 from parts of Anderson, Campbell, Fentress and Morgan Counties. It was named after Winfield Scott , also known as The Grand Old Man of the Army , a US diplomat, presidential candidate and long-time general in the British-American War , Mexican-American War 1846-1848, Black Hawk War , Second Seminole War and in the American Civil War .
Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Scott County had 21,127 people in 8,203 households and 6,012 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.53 percent white, 0.09 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.91 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.57 percent of the population.
Of the 8,203 households, 35.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.8 percent were single mothers, and 26.7 percent were non-families. 24.3 percent were single households and 9.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average household size was 3.02.
26.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.3 percent between 18 and 24, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.3 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 35 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 97.4 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.0 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 24,093 , and the median income for a family is $ 28,595. Males had a median income of $ 24,721 versus $ 19,451 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,927. 17.6 percent of families and 20.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
