The Big Sandy River is a tributary of the Tennessee River in the US state of Tennessee .
It rises about 8 km northwest of Lexington and flows in a north-northeast direction. Most of the river's course is canalized. The lower part of the river is an elongated (and the largest) bay of Kentucky Lake, which is an impoundment of the Tennessee River by the Kentucky Dam. At the mouth of the Big Sandy River is the city of Big Sandy , Tennessee. There is a larger polder there which , depending on the water level of the dam, is dry or flooded. Despite the canalization of the river, there are still natural wetlands. The total length of the river, including the dammed lower reaches, is around 90 km.
