Clay County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Celina .

The county is located in northern Tennessee, bordering Kentucky and has an area of ​​671 square kilometers, of which 60 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Monroe County, Kentucky, Cumberland County, Kentucky, Pickett County , Overton County , Jackson County, and Macon County .

history

Clay County was formed on June 24, 1870 from parts of Jackson County and Overton County. It was named after Henry Clay , a US statesman who was, among other things, a senator and speaker for the United States House of Representatives .

The Free Hills Rosenwald School is one of two entries for the county in the NRHP.

Two buildings in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 11, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Clay County had 7,976 people in 3,379 households and 2,331 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer.
