Francesco Quaresmio (also Francesco Quaresmi , Franciscus Quaresmius ; born April 4, 1583 in Lodi , Lombardy , Italy , † October 25, 1656 in Milan ) was an orientalist or palestinologist and Franciscan .

Life

Francesco Quaresmio was born on April 4, 1583 to the nobleman Alberto Quaresmio and his mother Laura Papa. He entered as early as about 1598, at the age of about 15. the Convention of the Franciscans of Mantua at.

Quaresmio repeatedly traveled to the Orient on behalf of the Pope . 1618-1619 he was appointed President of the Custody of the Holy Land . During this time he was arrested twice by the Turks. He stayed in Europe from 1620 before going back to Jerusalem in 1625 . The following year he gave a speech to Philip IV of Spain in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher , calling on him to retake the Holy Land .

From 1627 to 1629 Quaresmio oversaw the mission of the Chaldeans as their deputy patriarch and papal commissioner, as well as the mission of the Maronites . On behalf of Pope Urban VIII, he conducted the talks in Mosul with the Chaldean Church , which was to lead to a union of churches. However, this matter was unsuccessful. In 1629 Quaresmio interrupted his stay in the Middle East to report to the Pope on the situation of the Eastern churches. He then traveled back to the Middle East, how long he stayed there is not known.

Quaresmio later returned to Italy, only interrupted by trips within Europe (Germany, France, Belgium and Holland). He earned the respect of his contemporaries as a preacher , teacher of philosophy , theology and canon law . In 1637 Quaresmio was initially entrusted with the post of Guardian of the Monastery of S. Angelo in Milan; From 1645 to 1648 he held high offices as General Definitor and General Procurator in his order.
