Lip eczema

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lefzenekzem (Syn .: Lefzendermatitis , Lefzenfäule , Lippenfaltenpyodermie ) is a disease in dogs , which is characterized by a weeping-purulent inflammation of the lower lip. It is a special form of surface pyoderma or skin fold dermatitis ( intertrigo ). It is particularly common in spaniels , St. Bernard dogs , and Newfoundlands .

Origin and clinical picture

The disease manifests itself almost exclusively in the folds of skin on the lower lip that are superimposed on the upper lip. The mechanical irritation of the adjacent skin folds leads to mechanical damage to the epidermis. The colonization with streptococci and staphylococci leads to a purulent skin inflammation. Tartar and gingivitis promote the development of the disease.

Diagnosis and treatment

The diagnosis is made on the basis of the clinical picture. In a contact specimen, neutrophilic granulocytes and predominantly extra- and sometimes also intracellular cocci can be seen. Must be distinguished are the especially the German shepherd occurring mucocutaneous pyoderma and lupus erythematosus , bullous pemphigoid and hepatocutaneous syndrome .

Treatment is difficult and success is usually not permanent if the underlying cause is not eliminated. This can only be achieved through surgical correction of the lip fold. Conservative treatment consists of regular cleaning and care of the lip folds with mild antimicrobial solutions. Systemic antibiotics may also be indicated if they spread to the deeper layers of the skin .
