Ronny Levy, also Roni Levy (born November 14, 1966 in Netanya ), is a former Israeli football player and current coach .

Career as a player

Levy started playing soccer at the age of seven with Maccabi Netanja in his hometown. In 1985 he moved up to the squad of the first team, which was represented at the time in the Ligat ha'Al , the top division of Israel. In the 1987/88 season he was able to win the runner-up behind Hapoel Tel Aviv with his team . For the second half of the 1989/90 season Levy Netanja left after his team had missed the qualification for the championship round, and joined Bne Jehuda Tel Aviv . With his new team he was able to win the first championship for Bne Jehuda. In the summer of 1990 he returned to Netanya.

In the summer of 1992 Levy Maccabi Netanja left again and joined the top club Maccabi Haifa . With his new team he won the Israeli Cup in 1993 . In the subsequent European Cup Winners' Cup , the team moved into the second round after victories over F91 Dudelange and Torpedo Moscow , where it was defeated by the eventual finalist AC Parma on penalties. At the end of the season Leya won his second championship with Maccabi. In qualifying for the Champions League, Maccabi was defeated by SV Austria Salzburg . After two runners-up in 1995 and 1996 and another cup win in 1995 Levy ended his career in the summer of 1997.

National team

Levy played a total of 16 games for the Israeli national team between 1993 and 1995 . He made his debut on September 22, 1993 in a friendly against Romania . He played his last international match on August 16, 1995 against Hungary .

Career as a coach

After the end of his active career, Levy initially worked as a youth coach for his former club Maccabi Haifa . After he had already helped out as an interim coach in 2000, he became head coach of Maccabi at the beginning of the 2003/04 season. He won three championships in a row from 2004 to 2006. However , he was denied entry into the group stage of the UEFA Champions League . After the missed championship in 2008, Levy and Maccabi parted ways. At the end of 2008 he took over the league rivals Maccabi Petach Tikwa . Almost a year later he was released there in November 2009.

Levy left Israel and became head coach of the reigning Romanian champions Unirea Urziceni in early January 2010 . He led this to the runner-up in 2010 . After he had a bad start with his team in the 2010/11 season and failed to qualify for the Champions League , the club separated from him in August 2010. He returned to Israel and joined the relegation-threatened Beitar Jerusalem in January 2011 . After relegation in the relegation round he took him in mid-June 2011, the Romanian record champions Steaua Bucharest under contract. On September 29, 2011, he was released after five games without a win and replaced by Ilie Stan . A day later he became the head coach of Anorthosis Famagusta in Cyprus. With Anorthosis he reached the championship round in the 2011/12 season , but only finished last. In the 2012/13 season he was with his team in second place in the table when he was dismissed in early April 2013.

In early December 2013, Levy returned to Israel when he took over Beitar Jerusalem for the second time. With Beitar, he missed participation in the championship round. At the end of the season they parted ways again. In January 2015, he became the head coach of Maccabi Netanja . He led the promoted to relegation in the 2014/15 season. In summer 2015 he returned to Maccabi Haifa, where he inherited Marco Balbul . In Haifa, he won the Israeli Cup in 2016 and qualified for the Europa League . After being eliminated in the second qualifying round against FC Nõmme Kalju , he was sacked in July 2016. In October 2016, Levy became the head coach of Anorthosis Famagusta for the second time. He left the club at the end of September 2018.
