Diether IV von Katzenelnbogen († 1245 ) was Count von Katzenelnbogen from 1219 to 1245.

family

He was the son of Count Diether III. von Katzenelnbogen and either Bertha von Lichtenberg or Agnes von Neuenbaumberg. With this connection, a second center of power developed south of the family's origin on the Lahn.

Before 1219 Diether IV married Hildegunde (her family origin is not certain) and had children with her:

The sign of the Katzenelnbogen family was first known in 1240 after a seal from Diether IV. The heraldic animal is a soaring, looking lion, red on a golden environment, partly crowned. The crown, claws, tongue, eyes and ears were blue.

history

Auerbach Castle

Diether IV returned home from the Damiette crusade in 1220 . In 1222 ownership rights of the Katzenelnbogen family around Darmstadt , Bessungen and Groß-Gerau were confirmed as Würzburg fiefdoms. In order to protect the Katzenelnbogischen possessions south of the Main and the important connection between Heidelberg and Frankfurt am Main along the Bergstrasse Diether began at this time with the construction of a stronghold, the later Auerbach Castle . In addition, he built Lichtenberg Castle in the Odenwald into a territorial political center and in 1228 called himself "Comes de Lichtenberg" (Count von Lichtenberg) at the district court in Heppenheim .

When in 1232 the Archbishop of Mainz Siegfried III. von Eppstein , who received the imperial abbey Lorsch from Emperor Friedrich II and the Mark Heppenheim was divided into a Mainz and a Palatinate part, Diether was faced with new power relations in the region.

Diether IV was succeeded by his son Diether V as Count von Katzenelnbogen, under whom the Katzenelenbog possessions were finally divided into the Lower Counties on the Lahn, Taunus and Hunsrück and the Upper Counties , which developed from Diether's dominion.
