Life
Youth, lung disease
Selby left school at 15 to join the US Merchant Navy . There he contracted tuberculosis . He was released home at the age of 18 because he was terminally ill. One of his lungs therefore had to be surgically removed. Selby spent the next ten years bedridden with a variety of lung problems.
writer
Physically incapable of earning a living as an employee in this state, he decided: I know the alphabet, maybe I could become a writer. He started writing short stories.
He couldn't cope with the great success - and scandal - of his novel Last Exit Brooklyn . In the UK, the book was banned in 1966 because of its obscurity . About the book, he said, “It is not a book anyone recommends. Except maybe other writers. "
Difficulties again
Selby became addicted to alcohol and drugs . When caught with heroin , he went to jail.
After his release, he was actually addiction-free and turned to a new life in Los Angeles .
family
Selby has been married three times and has four children.
