Football in Azerbaijan

Football is the most popular sport in Azerbaijan . Azerbaijani football is managed by Azərbaycan Futbol Federasiyaları Assosiasiyası (AFFA), which hosts the national competitions and organizes the Azerbaijani national football team. Although the country is geographically in Asia, the association is a member of UEFA , which is why the national team takes part in European competitions.

The Azərbaycan Futbol Federasiyaları Assosiasiyası (in German: Association of Azerbaijani Football Associations ) is the national Azerbaijani football association.

The Football Association of Azerbaijan was founded after the independence of the Union Republic of AsSSR from the Soviet Union in 1991 to Azerbaijan ( dissolution of the Soviet Union ) in 1992. The association takes care of the organization of the Premyer Liqası ; the cup and all youth national teams (U-15, U-17, U-19, U21 ), as well as the Azerbaijani national football team . The association also organizes the matches of the national futsal team .

National competitions

The Premyer Liqası is the name of the highest football league in Azerbaijan. It was founded in 1992 after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The number of participating teams has often changed. There are eight teams in the league in the 2016/17 season that play for the championship title. The league is organized by the AFFA. The record champion is Neftçi Baku PFK with eight titles .

The Azerbaijani Football Cup ( Azerbaijani : Azərbaycan Milli Futbol Kuboku ) has also been held since 1992, and the organizer is the national association AFFA. With four exceptions, the finals took place in the Tofiq Bəhramov Stadium in the capital Baku .

The most successful team with seven titles is Neftçi Baku , the current title holder (2016) is FK Qarabağ Ağdam .

The Azerbaijani national football team is the selection of the best football players from Azerbaijan. The team has played official international matches since 1994. In the same year, a national U-21 team of Azerbaijan was formed. The team has not yet been able to qualify for a soccer world championship or a soccer championship .
