The gendarmerie corps of the Vatican City, today between 130 and 150 men , emerged from the old papal gendarmerie, which was founded on July 14th, 1816 by Pope Pius VII . The Papal Gendarmerie was founded in 1970 by Pope Paul VI. into a civilian police unit - the "Vigilanza" (Corpo di Vigilanza dello Stato della Città del Vaticano) - converted, the Nobel Guard and the Palating Guard were dissolved at that time. In 2002, the Vigilanza was renamed Gendarmerie Corps by John Paul II . On September 30, 2007, the gendarmes were sworn in for the first time since 1970 . In 2008, two special units were set up within the gendarmerie corps, a “rapid reaction force” (GIR: “Gruppo Intervento Rapido”) and an “anti-sabotage department”, which are supposed to counter the increased terrorist threats. Also in 2008 the gendarmerie corps of the Vatican City - and thus the Vatican State - became the 187th member of Interpol .

Gianluca Gauzzi Broccoletti has been the Inspector General of the Gendarmerie Corps since 2019, replacing Domenico Giani .
