Domenico Giani (born August 16, 1962 in Arezzo ) is an Italian inspector general of the Vatican gendarmerie .

Giani, who has a doctorate in education , had taken on security duties at the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic and was an officer in the Guardia di Finanza . In 1999 he was appointed deputy to Camillo Cibin , the head of the then Vigilanza (Vatican gendarmerie). He has headed the gendarmerie since June 3, 2006. In this capacity, Domenico Giani was also the bodyguard of Pope Benedict XVI. and carried out this task under Pope Francis until October 15, 2019. Domenico Giani, fell in an affair over confidential documents to five Vatican employees who had been suspended for questionable real estate deals in London. Gianluca Gauzzi Broccoletti has been his successor in office, as head of the Vatican Police Corps and thus the Pope's highest bodyguard, since October 16, 2019.

Giani is married and has two children.
