Camillo Cibin
Camillo Cibin (born June 5, 1926 in Salgareda di Piave , † October 25, 2009 in Rome ) was an Italian long-time papal bodyguard and from 1972 to 2006 head of the Vatican security forces .
Life
Cibin had been in papal service since 1947. In 1963 he was under Pope Paul VI. top bodyguard. Cibin arrested the assassin Mehmet Ali Ağca during the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981 . He also saved the Pope when he was attacked with a knife in Fatima by a confused Lefebvre supporter. Camillo Cibin headed the gendarmerie well beyond the Vatican age limit of 75 years until June 3, 2006. He was also responsible for the safety of the Popes' trips abroad, most recently in May 2006 when Pope Benedict XVI visited. in Poland. He retired after 58 years of service. His successor was Domenico Giani .
