Rainer Rauffmann (born February 26, 1967 in Kleve , North Rhine-Westphalia ), Markos Rauffmann in Cyprus , is a former Cypriot soccer player of German origin who currently works as a talent scout for the Cypriot first division club Alki Larnaka .
Player career
In Germany
Rauffmann began playing football at the local game association in Ebermannsdorf, in the Upper Palatinate district of Amberg-Sulzbach , and switched to the Bayern league club 1. FC Amberg - out of adolescence . In the 1991/92 season he was successful six times in 18 games in the 2. Bundesliga North for Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin . He crowned his second division debut on July 23, 1991 (1st matchday) in a 5-2 win at home against FC Remscheid with his two goals to the interim 3-0 in the 48th minute and the 5-2 final score in the 76th Minute. As a result of the relegation of his club, he moved to the second division SV Meppen in the "single-track" 2nd Bundesliga in 1992/93 , stayed there for three seasons and played 105 league games in which he scored 37 goals.
For the 1995/96 season he was signed by the Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt , for whom he immediately scored his first Bundesliga goal on August 12, 1995 (1st matchday) in a 2-2 draw in the home game against Karlsruher SC , the goal for the interim 1-1 in the 43rd minute, scored. With his four goals in 26 Bundesliga games, he could not prevent the relegation of Frankfurt.
He then joined Bundesliga promoted Arminia Bielefeld , but only made four league appearances due to personal differences with coach Ernst Middendorp .
In this regard, he moved - on loan - to Austria to the first division club LASK Linz , for which he completed 16 league games and scored three goals.
In Cyprus
In 1997 he finally accepted an offer from the Cypriot first division club Omonia Nicosia and later justified his decision as follows:
“That really appealed to me: beach, sun and sea. In addition, my name in Germany was broken after the relegations with Frankfurt and Bielefeld. "
The retired bully became a superstar in Cyprus. In seven seasons for Omonia Nicosia, he played 152 league games and scored 181 goals. He was the top scorer in the First Division in 1998 with 42, 1999 with 36, 2000 with 35 and 2001 with 30 goals this season and won the championship with his team in 2001 and 2003 . In 1998 he was the most successful goalscorer in Europe, but because of the low coefficient of the Cypriot league, he was denied the Golden Shoe .
In 2002 Rauffmann received the Cypriot citizenship , which enabled him to play for the Cypriot national team. During qualifying for the 2004 European Championship, he was used for the island nation four times and scored two goals. He made his debut on September 7, 2002 in Nicosia in the 2-1 defeat by France . He scored his two international goals on November 20, 2002 (also in Nicosia) in a 2-1 win over Malta with the goal to make it 1-0 in the 50th minute and on March 29, 2003 in Limassol with a 1-1 -Draw against the selection of Israel with the equalizer in the 61st minute. His last international match for Cyprus he played on April 2, 2003 in Ljubljana in the 1: 4 defeat against the selection of Slovenia .
Due to cartilage damage, he ended his active career in May 2004. At his farewell game in July, the fans celebrated him with standing ovations and “Trellos Germanos” chants, which means something like “crazy German”. The "Pan-Cypriot Association of Professional Footballers (Pasp)" awarded him a plaque of honor for his services to Cypriot football. “Rainer honored the Cypriot footballer, although he was an opponent for some of us and caused us concern,” said “Pasp” President Kostas Malekos when handing over a badge of honor to the striker from Omonia Nicosia. Rauffmann then recognized the plaque of honor as one of the most valuable awards of his career.
Coaching career
Rauffmann acquired his coaching license as part of a crash course for national players in Greece . After the 2nd match day of the 2004/05 season, his former club Omonia Nicosia hired him as sports director. When head coach Michailovic threw in the towel in January, Rauffmann said he was ignored when finding a coach, which caused him to resign on the same day.
In June 2005 he started his first coaching position with the Cypriot first division club Olympiakos Nicosia . Since the players were not paid for two months, Rauffmann demonstratively stayed away from a meal organized by club boss Kleanthis Georgiadis at the end of the year and terminated his contract before the turn of the year. After working as a trainer and sports director at Omonia Nicosia, Rauffmann worked as a chief scout . (As of September 2012) .
