Under the name " Gulf of Porto: Piana Calanche, Gulf of Girolata and nature reserve Scandola ", UNESCO has summarized four areas in the west of the island of Corsica , which belongs to France .

The inscription in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage took place during the 7th session of the World Heritage Committee from December 5th to 9th 1983 in the Italian metropolis of Florence .

The following criteria were met at the time of registration on the World Heritage List:

  • vii: The goods have outstanding natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance.
  • viii: The goods represent exceptional examples of the main stages in the history of the earth, including the development of life, essential geological processes in progress in the development of landforms or essential geomorphological or physiogeographical features.
  • x: The goods contain the most significant and typical habitats for the in situ conservation of biodiversity on earth, including those that contain threatened species which are of exceptional universal value for scientific reasons or for their conservation.

The reserve, which is part of the Corsica Regional Nature Park, is located on the La Scandola peninsula , which is made up of impressive porphyritic rock . The vegetation offers resting and breeding areas for seagulls , cormorants and sea ​​eagles , the clear water with its small islands and inaccessible caves is home to a rich marine fauna and flora.

Gulf of Porto

The Gulf of Porto is a bay in the Mediterranean ( ). It lies between Sia in the north and Sevinfuori in the south. World icon

Calanche

The Calanche are a bizarre rocky landscape south of Porto in the Corsica Regional Nature Park ( ). The rocks made of reddish granite are about 400 meters above sea level directly on the coast, they seem to glow red when the sun is shining. World icon

The narrow road from Porto to Piana (D81) leads directly through the Calanche. The rocks are accessible from the road, but better on foot. Several signposted walking paths lead through the rocky landscape and to the best viewpoints. The entire area has become a heavily visited tourist destination.

Cape Girolata

Cape Girolata is a headland at the end of the Osani peninsula ( ) near the Osani municipality of the same name . World icon

La Scandola

The La Scandola peninsula ( ) on the west coast of Corsica near Porto has been a nature reserve under the supervision of the Parc naturel régional de Corse authority since 1975, making it the oldest nature reserve in France. Its location is unique in the Mediterranean and can only be reached on foot or in one of the many excursion boats that leave from Porto or Calvi . World icon
