The Corsica Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional de Corse ) is a natural park in France . It was founded in 1972 and covers an area of ​​about 350,000  hectares over about 40% of the island of Corsica .

Geographical location

The park extends over both departments of Corsica, Corse-du-Sud and Haute-Corse , and includes around 80 municipalities . It has an area of ​​around 350,000 hectares. The Col de Bavella mountain pass and the Grande Randonnée 20 long-distance hiking trail lead through the nature park . In the north-west it finds its natural limit on the sea coast of the nature reserves of the Gulf of Porto and the La Scandola peninsula . The park administration is located in Ajaccio , outside the park area.

Flora and fauna

The geographic attractions that are located in the area of ​​the nature park include the Forêt de L'Ospédale , Forêt de Bavella , Forêt de Valdu-Niellu , Lac de Nino and the Calanche .

The nature park is also home to more than 800 different animal species, including ospreys , golden eagles , puffins , bearded vultures , cormorants and mouflons .

The flora of the park includes thyme, rosemary, myrtle, lavender, gorse, strawberry trees , juniper and mastic bushes as well as the maquis native to Corsica , low-stemmed bushes that grow up to an altitude of 400 m on the plateaus and on the mountain slopes. Furthermore, prickly pear cacti ( opuntia ), olive trees, agaves and aloes can be found in the lower mountain ranges . In the higher elevations, on the other hand, cork oaks , beach pines , beeches and sweet chestnuts grow, and above 1500 m alder and Corsican black pines.
