L'Ospédale is a small town north of Porto-Vecchio in the Corse-du-Sud department in Corsica . He is also the namesake for the surrounding wooded highlands Massif de L'Ospédale , for the forest area Forêt de L'Ospédale and for the Barrage de L'Ospédale dam .

L'Ospédale

The hamlet of L'Ospédale is about 800 m above sea level on a natural rock ledge on the D 368 connecting road between Porto-Vecchio and Zonza , about 19 km from Porto-Vecchio. In the middle of the village you will find a stone fountain that is said to date from Roman times. It is believed that the place was already used as a spa by the Romans. In 1762 a hospital - hence the name - was founded here for the malaria victims from the then swampy area around Porto-Vecchio. At that time, the malaria mosquito Anopheles was widespread on the east coast .

In the meantime, chalets and small summer villas have been built between rocks and pine trees. A sundial has a collection of large blocks of granite. The view from L'Ospédale extends to the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio and the Gulf of Santa Manza , and on a clear day to the north coast of Sardinia .

The French writer Prosper Mérimée chose L'Ospédale as the home of his protagonist Mateo Falcone in the story of the same name.

Since 2010, a stage of the Critérium International cycling race has been running from Porto-Vecchio to L'Ospédale.

Massif de L'Ospédale

The wooded highlands of the massif of L'Ospédale stretches from the Bavella massif in the north to the Cagna mountains with its Col de Bacinu in the south, where it ends with low ridge to the sea. Without having to overcome large differences in altitude, there are always views of the red rock needles of the Bavella Group with the Col de Bavella (1,218 m).

Forêt de L'Ospédale

This approx. 4,500 hectare wooded area in the Regional Nature Park of Corsica is characterized by the sea beach - and Corsican black pines , sweet chestnuts - celva and holm oaks as well as mighty rock towers and ferns .

Barrage de L'Ospédale

A 25 m high dam built as an earth dam , over which the D368 leads north to Zonza , dams this important drinking water reservoir of around three million cubic meters for the area of Porto-Vecchio and the Asinao valley. Bathing in the reservoir with its barren landscape surrounded by scree and pine trees is therefore not permitted.

Cascade de Piscia di Gallo

A little north of the Barrage de L'Ospédale on the D 368 there is a parking lot at an altitude of 900 m. From there a signposted footpath (approx. 1½ hours there and back) leads through an impressive mountain landscape to the Cascade de Piscia di Gallo (also written Piscia di Ghjaddu , German: Hahnenpiss waterfall). The Oso brook plunges more than 60 meters into the depths.
