The GR 20 (French: Grande Randonnée 20 ) is a GR long-distance hiking trail on the French island of Corsica ( Corsica Regional Nature Park ).

course

The 170 kilometer long path connects the two places Calenzana and Conca across the Corsican high mountains in a north-south direction. The path laid out by Michel Fabrikant was opened in 1972, the number 20 refers to the then department number of Corsica. It is considered a very demanding hiking trail, as it runs on long stretches through high mountainous terrain higher than 1500  m far away from populated areas. There are also some climbing areas to be overcome. The path crosses some mountain passes. About halfway in Vizzavona there is a connection to the Corsican Railway . Most of the route goes through the territory of the Corsica Regional Nature Park .

Waymarking

The entire GR 20 takes around 15 days, with only about every fourth hiker hikers through the entire route in one go. A section that can be hiked through in three days for less experienced hikers with good equipment is between the Col de Bavella and the Col de Verde and leads to the nearby Monte Incudine . In the north, the GR 20 crosses the Col de Vergio . Between Calenzana and Vizzavona you can make a detour to Monte Cinto . This can be climbed in one day from the Haut Asco ski station at the end of the driveway and offers a good view of the Corsican mountain landscape. However, if you follow the original GR 20, by 2015 you came to a key point - the "Cirque de la Solitude", which has now been replaced by another route , where some climbing passages had to be mastered.

The path should only be used in the season from mid-June to the end of October, as it is only free of snow and ice during this period. The refuges in the nature park along the long-distance hiking trail are usually manned by a guard (gardien) from the beginning of June to the end of September . In the past, hikers had to provide themselves with provisions for their journey , because the remote location of the mountain huts only allowed a limited supply of food (sausage, cheese, sweets) for the overnight stay. This changed around 2005. All huts offer drinks and hot meals. Even the Bergeries (sheep farms), which are located on the edge of the GR 20, sometimes offer overnight accommodation and full board. From the end of September the catering options are limited because the Bergeries close and some huts are only managed to a limited extent.

Since May 2009, all hikers along the GR 20 have been asked to make a reservation for overnight stays in the refuges and the rental tents (Bivouacs). Overnight stays in your own tent do not have to be registered (as of autumn 2013).

The mark of the path is a white and a red stripe, which are painted on rocks and trees at eye level. In other places stone men help keep an eye on the path.

Misfortune in the Cirque de la Solitude on June 10, 2015

Cirque de la Solitude

On June 10, 2015, shortly after 3 p.m., a rock fall occurred in the Cirque de la Solitude due to heavy rainfall , in which seven people were killed and others injured. As a result of the incident, all climbing aids were removed from the Cirque de la Solitude, so that from the 2016 season onwards it can only be climbed by experienced mountaineers with the appropriate equipment. As an alternative, the route was led via a high alpine bypass route and marked with the red and white signs. The route leads from Haut Asco via the ascent to Monte Cinto to the Pointe des Eboulis (2607 m), past Lac de Cinto to the Refuge de Tighjettu. The walking time indicated is 8 to 10 hours.
