The Golo ( Corsican : Golu) is a river in France that runs in the Haute-Corse department on the island of Corsica . It rises in the Corsica Regional Nature Park ( Parc naturel régional de Corse ), on the southern flank of Capu Tafunatu (2335 m), in the municipality of Albertacce , generally drains in a north-east to east direction and flows 89 kilometers into the municipal boundary of Lucciana and Vescovato into the Tyrrhenian Sea .
course
First, the river crosses the Forêt de Valdu Niellu and forms the Cascade de Radule waterfall . Then it breaks through the Corsican mountains with enormous inclines in various sections of the gorge. It is dammed up several times to generate energy, including in the Calacuccia reservoir . Immediately below is the Scala di Santa Regina gorge . In its middle and lower reaches, the valley of the Golo is used by the national road 193 and the railway line from Bastia to Ajaccio .

history
On the historic Ponte Novu , around six kilometers northeast of Ponte Leccia , Pasquale Paoli's troops lost a decisive battle against the French troops under the leadership of the Comte de Vaux in 1769 , which finally ended the fourteen-year Corsican Republic. The bridge of Genoese origin was not destroyed by retreating German troops until World War II. The river gave its name to the historical French department of the same name, which existed from 1793-1811 and which encompassed the whole of northern Corsica.
tourism
The Golo is one of the most traveled and most difficult white water rivers in Corsica. Even in midsummer, enough water is drained from the Calacuccia reservoir once a week so that it can be navigated even at low tide.
