Ponte Novu

The Ponte Novu is the ruin of a bridge in Corsica over the Golo river near the hamlet of Ponte Novu in the municipality of Castello-di-Rostino . The former five- arch stone arch bridge was probably built by the Genoese in the 17th century . In 1769 it was the scene of the Battle of Ponte Novu , which marked the end of the young Corsican Republic and the beginning of French rule. During the Second World War, the bridge was destroyed by retreating German troops in 1943.

The bridge has been classified as a monument historique since 1993 .

The people of Ponte Novu organize a memorial ceremony around the bridge ruins on every anniversary of the battle.

A few meters downstream, a new bridge structure was built for the Route Territorial 20 road .
