Piana is a French commune with 482 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) on the west coast of Corsica . It belongs to the Corse-du-Sud department , the Ajaccio arrondissement and the Sevi-Sorru-Cinarca canton . Piana is classified as one of the Plus beaux villages de France ( Most Beautiful Villages in France ).

Piana is located in the Calanche on a plateau at an altitude of 438 m above the Gulf of Porto 78 km north of Ajaccio and is known for its steep granite rocks.

history

In the 15th century, the area of ​​today's municipality was under the rule of the Seigneurs de Leca . On March 29, 1489, after an uprising by Jean-Paul de Leca, the Genoese massacred the inhabitants , the area was largely uninhabited until it was resettled in 1690. In 1713 the place received its own parish. The present church was built between 1765 and 1795. Resistance stronghold during World War II. On the beach of Arone (9 km away) the submarine Casabianca brought people and weapons from Algiers (seat of the French Liberation Committee, CFLN) ashore for the resistance in Corsica on February 6th, 1943; they were put into hiding places (e.g. . Shepherds) and later distributed to FN groups in the country (Piana, Ota, Marignana, Petreto-Bicchisano). Birthplace of two resistance fighters: Archange Giovanelli and Jean Casanova Together with the Girolata Bay, the Bay of Porto and the La Scandola Nature Park , the Calanche was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983 .
