history

prehistory

The first traces of settlement can be found in Cargèse from around 7000–6000 BC. Later the area was settled first by Iberians and then by Phoenicians. The Greeks founded the city of Aleria in 565, which came to the Roman Empire and was later ravaged by vandals and decayed.

Greek foundation

On March 14, 1676, three Genoese galleys with 800 Greek refugees landed near Paomia in Corsica. In 1729, during a general uprising of the Corsicans against Genoa, the Greek newcomers were expelled. In 1774 they were awarded the Cargèse area to compensate for the loss of their property in Paomia. They founded the present-day Cargèse here.

Some of the Greeks accepted the Roman Catholic rite, while the other part continued to follow the Greek Catholic, so that the place today has two churches: the Roman Catholic Resurrection Church, built in 1825–1828, and the Greek Catholic, built in 1852–1872 Saint-Spiridon church.
