Location of the province in the overseas region of New Caledonia |
The Loyalty Islands ( French Îles Loyauté ) are a group of islands in the Pacific . They are part of the French overseas territory of New Caledonia and are about 100 km from the main island. They form the province of the Loyalty Islands, one of the three provinces of New Caledonia, are like New Caledonia in the area of the tropical rainforest and geographically belong to Melanesia . The southeastern island of the group in the geographical sense, Walpole , administratively no longer belongs to the Province of the Loyalty Islands, but to the southern province of New Caledonia, and within it to the municipality of Île des Pins .
geography
The archipelago consists of four atolls : Lifou , Maré , Ouvéa and Tiga , and several smaller islands. Taken together, their area is 2500 km². The highest point is 138 m above sea level on the island of Maré.
population
The population is of mixed Melanesian and Polynesian descent with a small minority of European descent. 18,353 people live on the Loyalty Islands.
history
The first recorded western contact with the residents of the Loyalty Islands is with the British Capt. Attributed to William Raven of the London merchant ship Britannia , which sailed the Norfolk Island – Batavia route in 1793.
However, it is very likely that the actual island discovery and naming goes back to the British ship Loyalty (also Loyalist , Jethro Daggett Master), which made a South Sea trade voyage from London from 1789-1790.
