Harry Catterick (born November 26, 1919 in Darlington , † March 9, 1985 in Liverpool ) was an English football player and football coach .
Coaching career
His first engagement as a coach had Catterick as a player-coach at the third division club Crewe Alexandra from 1951 to 1953. From 1953 to 1958 he coached the third division AFC Rochdale , with whom he was mainly in the lower midfield. What was important, however, was the 10th place in the 1957/58 season, which was sufficient to qualify the club for the new single-track league when the north and south seasons of the third division were united.
In 1958 he was a coach at Sheffield Wednesday and immediately led the club back to the first division. The 1960/61 season ended Wednesday as runner-up, the best placement since the championship in 1930 and a success that the club has not been able to replicate since then.
But two game days before the end of the season he was signed by Everton to replace Johnny Carey . With the Toffees he won the English championship as a coach in 1963 and 1970 and the English Cup in 1966. After the unsuccessful years 1971 and 1972, he got a heart attack on January 5th, 1972 , due to extreme stress. After this bad luck in his health, he resigned as a trainer and became the sports director until 1975. From 1975 to 1977 he still coached Preston North End . Catterick died of a heart attack on March 9, 1985 after attending the FA Cup game Ipswich Town against Everton FC at the stadium.
