Ernie Blenkinsop (actually: Ernest Blenkinsop ; born April 20, 1902 in Cudworth , South Yorkshire , † April 24, 1969 in Sheffield ) was an English football player . Between 1928 and 1933 he completed a total of 26 international matches for the English national football team .
Athletic career
After Blenkinsop first learned to play football at his hometown club, the Cudworth United Methodists , and was later used as a center forward at Hull City , he moved to the second division team Sheffield Wednesday for the 1922/23 season and played there from then on in the position of left back .
In his fourth season he was promoted to the first division with Sheffield. A continuous improvement in the performance of Blenkinsop and the club followed. Blenkinsop, whose strength lay in one-on-one combat, made his debut for the English national team on May 17, 1928, when they defeated the French team 5-1 in Paris . Another high followed in 1929 when Sheffield won the English championship.
Only a year later, Sheffield was able to defend the title and Blenkinsop became captain of the national team. It should follow in the total of eleven years Blenkinsop for Sheffield no further trophies and in 1934 Blenkinsop moved to Liverpool , which especially disappointed the supporters of Sheffield Wednesday.
In Liverpool, where he was used in a total of 71 games, he could not build on his best performances from previous days. After further positions in lower divisions at the clubs Cardiff City , FC Buxton and FC Hurst, and as a guest player during the Second World War at Halifax Town and Bradford City Blenkinsop then ended his career.
After the war, Blenkinsop and his son, Barry Blenkinsop, ran the Mason's Arms in Crookes , Sheffield in the 1950s and the Sportsman's Inn in Crosspool , Sheffield until his death in 1969 .
