Lee Chapman (born December 5, 1959 in Lincoln ) is a retired English football player . As a player, he won the English championship with Leeds United in 1992 . In 1989 he had won the English League Cup with Nottingham Forest .

Player career

Stoke City, Arsenal and Sunderland (1978–1984)

Lee Chapman made his debut in the Football League First Division for Stoke City in 1979/80 at the age of nineteen . He had previously played four third division appearances on loan for Plymouth Argyle . During the 1980/81 season he earned a regular place and scored fifteen league goals in forty-one games. In 1981/82 he increased his goal yield to sixteen league goals, but ended the season with Stoke only in eighth place in the table.

On August 25, 1982, the 22-year-old attacker moved to Arsenal for £ 500,000 , but did not get there in the First Division 1982/83 as hoped (19 league games / 3 goals). After he was rarely used in the course of the subsequent season, he moved to AFC Sunderland on December 29, 1983 . By the end of the 1983/84 season he scored three goals in fifteen league games for the first division club.

Sheffield Wednesday and Chamois Niort (1984–1988)

On August 24, 1984 Sheffield Wednesday signed the last striker who was no longer accurate for a transfer fee of £ 100,000. 1984/85 found Chapman (40 games / 14 goals) back to his old strength and ended the season with his new club as eighth of the table. Also in the following three seasons, the attacker scored double digits, especially in 1986/87 (19 league hits) and 1987/88 (20 league hits) among the top scorers in the league.

After these two excellent seasons and the departure of his coach Howard Wilkinson to Leeds United, he moved to the French second division team Chamois Niort on June 1, 1988 . After only ten games (three goals), however, he returned to England in October 1988.

Nottingham Forest and Leeds United (1988-1993)

On October 17, 1988, the English first division club Nottingham Forest signed him for £ 350,000 . With the team trained by Brian Clough , Chapman finished (30 games / 8 goals) the 1988/89 season in third place and only failed in the semi-finals of the FA Cup in 1988/89 in the replay at Liverpool FC. The first semi-final game had been canceled due to the Hillsborough disaster . Already on April 9, 1989 Forest had secured the title in the league cup final 1989 with Lee Chapman (3-1 against Luton Town ). In addition, thanks to two goals from Lee Chapman, the club won the Full Members Cup with a 4-3 draw over Everton FC . After seven hits in eighteen league games, he moved to Leeds United at the beginning of the second half of the season on January 11, 1990 .

Leeds has been coached since 1988 by Howard Wilkinson , who was Chapman's coach at Sheffield Wednesday between 1984 and 1988. With twelve hits in twenty-one league games, he played his part in winning the second division championship. Also in the Football League First Division 1990/91 he was able to preserve his marksmanship and scored with twenty-one league goals only one goal less than the top scorer Alan Smith from champions Arsenal. Leeds moved up to fourth place in the First Division in 1991/92 by winning their first championship since 1974 . Chapman scored sixteen goals and was again the top scorer of his team. After fourteen goals in the first Premier League (Leeds only finished seventeenth), the 33-year-old attacker moved to second division FC Portsmouth on August 11, 1993 .

Further stations (1993–1996)

Just a month later he signed with first division promoted West Ham United and scored seven times in thirty games. After further positions at Southend United , Ipswich Town , Leeds United, Swansea City and the Norwegian first division side Strømsgodset IF , he ended his playing career in 1996.
