Carlton Lloyd Palmer (born December 5, 1965 in Rowley Regis ) is a retired English football player and coach . Between 1992 and 1993 he played eighteen caps for England.

Player career

West Bromwich Albion (1984-1989)

Carlton Palmer started his playing career in the Football League First Division 1985/86 for his youth club West Bromwich Albion . He played twenty league games and rose at the end of the season as bottom of the table in the second division. After almost three years as a regular in the Second Division , he left West Bromwich on February 23, 1989 and moved to first division club Sheffield Wednesday for £ 750,000 .

Sheffield Wednesday (1989-1994)

For his new club he played thirteen league games (one goal) in the 1988/89 season and secured relegation with Sheffield. This did not succeed the team around Carlton Palmer (34 league games) in the following season , Sheffield rose due to the worse goal difference instead of Luton Town in the second division. Wednesday made the 1990/91 season much more successful with direct resurgence and entry into the final of the 1990/91 English League Cup . With a 1-0 win in the final over Manchester United , the club won this competition for the first time without Palmer (45 league games / 2 goals). At the beginning of the First Division in 1991/92 Trevor Francis took over the coaching post of Ron Atkinson, who had switched to Aston Villa, and led Sheffield to a very good third place in the table. Palmer (42 league games / 5 hits) now also demonstrated his class in the House of Lords of English football and captured the attention of England coach Graham Taylor . In addition to a seventh place in the Premier League in 1992/93 , Wednesday reached the finals in both English cup competitions. First, Viv Anderson , Chris Waddle and Carlton Palmer's team played the final game in the 1992/93 League Cup against Arsenal on April 18, 1993 and lost it 2-1. For just one month the opponent in the FA Cup final was again Arsenal and in this competition the team from London prevailed after a 1-1 draw in the first game and 2-1 in the replay.

Leeds United (1994-1997)

On June 30, 1994, Palmer moved to league rivals Leeds United for £ 2,600,000 . In the Premier League 1994/95 he was used regularly and managed to qualify for the 1995/96 UEFA Cup via fifth place , in which United, however, was eliminated early. The performance in the league also deteriorated significantly and led to two placements in the lower midfield in 1996 and 1997. But Leeds reached the league cup final in 1995/96 , but lost 3-0 to Aston Villa.

Southampton FC, Nottingham Forest and Coventry City (1997-2001)

In the course of the Premier League 1997/98 he signed a contract with Southampton FC on September 26, 1997 and played for the club until January 21, 1999, before joining league rivals Nottingham Forest , who were in danger of relegation . After relegation with his new team, he changed clubs again on September 17, 1999 and from then on played for the first division club Coventry City . He later returned twice on loan to his old club Sheffield Wednesday before ending his career as a player-coach at lower-class clubs.

English national team (1992-1993)

On April 29, 1992, the 26-year-old Carlton Palmer made his debut in the English national team at 2-2 in Russia. In the summer of 1992 he played three more preparation games for the 1992 European Football Championship in Sweden and was appointed to the English European Championship squad by national coach Graham Taylor . Palmer played all three preliminary round games, but had to travel home with England after the preliminary round. After the tournament he played eight games in qualifying for the 1994 World Cup in the United States and scored his first goal in a 6-0 home win over San Marino. However, England only reached third place behind Norway and the Netherlands and thus missed participation in the final tournament. Under Taylor's successor Terry Venables , Palmer was no longer used.

Coaching career

Stockport County (2001-2003)

On November 6, 2001, Palmer moved from Coventry City to the second division Stockport County and took over the post of player-coach. County rose at the end of the 2001/02 season from bottom of the table in the third division and ended the 2002/03 season in the new division as fourteenth. After a false start in the 2003/04 season, Carlton Palmer was released on September 18, 2003 in Stockport.

Mansfield Town (2004-2005)

After an interim player activity at Dublin City , Palmer took over on November 11, 2004 initially as a temporary coach at the fourth division club Mansfield Town . After just six points from the first nine games of the 2005/06 season, Palmer resigned September 17, 2005 from his post.
