The London Borough of Wandsworth [ ˈwɒndzwəθ ] is a borough of London . It is located in the southwest of the city. When the Greater London administrative region was founded in 1965, it emerged from the Metropolitan Borough of Battersea and the Metropolitan Borough of Wandsworth in the county of Surrey (excluding the districts of Clapham and Streatham).
The population in 2008 was composed of 79.7% white, 7.4% Asian, 7.2% black and 1.0% Chinese.
meaning
The Clapham Junction , Britain's largest train station, located in the east of the district. Battersea Power Station is Wandsworth's landmark . Also located with the Park Battersea a popular, 83-hectare scale 1846-1864 and opened as early as 1858 of parkland including a zoo and a Japanese pagoda includes, in the quarter. In Wandsworth lies the famous Wandsworth Prison of the same name , in which felons sentenced to death were executed until the 1960s.
history
Battersea was considered a stronghold of the left wing of the labor movement in the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century . In 1892, in the constituency of Battersea North with John Burns one of the first representatives of the trade unions into the House voted, from 1922 to 1923 and from 1924 to 1929 the native of India was of communist Shapurji Saklatvala that constituency.
